Since the Alabama ban on texting while driving went into effect on August 1, the City of Mobile has given out nine tickets for this offense.
Some Alabama jurisdictions have yet to issue a citation under the state’s new law. To date, according to the Anniston Star, the Anniston, Jacksonville and Oxford police departments as well as the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office have not issued any citations for texting while behind the wheel.
Outlawing texting while driving is a step in the right direction for the safety of Alabama motorists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 5,400 people are killed in auto accidents caused by motorists who were texting each year. That’s an average of about 15 people a day who are killed in traffic fatalities that could have been prevented.
