Halloween Safety Tips

In This Article

When you head out to go trick-or-treating with your little ones tonight, keep these safety tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in mind:

  • Do not allow children to walk near lit candles or luminaries. Make sure that their costumes are flame resistant.
  • If your child is wearing a mask, make sure that he or she can see well. Also, make sure that their costumes do not drag on the ground to prevent them from tripping and injuring themselves.
  • Make sure that all costume accessories, such as swords and knives, are short, soft and flexible.
  • Bring a flashlight, not only so you’ll be able to see but so that others can see you, as well.
  • Use reflective tape on costumes so drivers will be sure to see them.
  • Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by a trusted adult.
  • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. Halloween is notorious for child pedestrian accidents, so be sure to stay with your child to ensure their safety. Always use sidewalks where possible.
  • Warn your child to not eat any treats before you or another adult has carefully examined it for evidence of tampering.
