As parents, we genuinely want our kids to succeed in school\u2014both academically and socially. Sadly, bullying is sometimes disregarded with statements like “Just ignore it” or “they’re only jealous,” but what good are those when a child is suffering physically or psychologically? In fact, bullying is a common occurrence in school, and according to the <\/span>National Center for Educational Statistics<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>one out of every five (20.2 percent) students have reported being bullied<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How National Bullying Prevention Month Began<\/b><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In today\u2019s society, bullying is sometimes hard for parents to notice and accept right away because bullying looked different when they were kids. Bullying also carried a different reputation – Bullying used to be seen as a necessary part of childhood that toughens kids up. However, near the beginning of the new millennium, attitudes toward bullying changed as people realized the devastating long-term effects that bullying can have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In 2006, <\/span>PACER\u2019S National Bullying Prevention Center<\/b> founded <\/span>National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week<\/span><\/i> in an effort to bring to light the effects of bullying and to empower parents and schools to put an end to childhood bullying.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As part of a national drive to inform communities about their part in reducing bullying, PACER extended the week to a full month in 2010 and named October National Bullying Prevention Month.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bullying and Its Various Forms<\/b><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As stated by the <\/span>U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a>, bullying is \u201c<\/span>unwanted, aggressive behavior \u2026 involving a real or perceived power imbalance.<\/span><\/i>\u201d And because it can be a <\/span>violation of federal law<\/span><\/a> in some cases, bullying not only has an impact on the children who are the target but also on those who engage in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Although bullying takes many different forms, all of its impacts are the same. Each of these entails a disparity in power, such as popularity, physical prowess, or the capacity to humiliate by rumor or other information.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
