In this blog, we\u2019ll outline what to do if you get\u00a0road rash\u00a0injuries\u00a0during a\u00a0motorcycle crash\u00a0in Mississippi or Alabama.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Road Rash?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Road rash\u00a0is caused by friction during a fall, rubbing away layers of your skin. Sometimes called a \u201craspberry,\u201d minor\u00a0road rash\u00a0can feel like a bad sunburn. However, serious cases often need emergency\u00a0medical care\u2014and even surgery. While most cases are relatively mild, there are three\u00a0types of\u00a0road rash&#8211; and doctors treat them all very differently.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>First-degree\u00a0road rash:\u00a0<\/strong>Your skin feels burnt and painful, and your skin looks red. However, you may not have broken your skin or only have minor scrapes.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Second-degree\u00a0road rash:\u00a0<\/strong>The road\u2019s surface or debris breaks your skin during the\u00a0motorcycle accident, and dirt, rocks, and glass may get stuck in the wound. You may experience permanent scarring.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Third-degree\u00a0road rash:\u00a0<\/strong>A very\u00a0severe injury, friction rubs away all the layers of your skin. You may need a\u00a0skin graft\u00a0and are likely to see permanent scarring.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to protect against\u00a0road rash\u00a0is by riding safely and wearing proper protective equipment. However, even the most responsible\u00a0motorcycle rider\u00a0can&#8217;t avoid every\u00a0road rash\u00a0injury, especially when someone else\u2019s unsafe actions cause you to crash your bike.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Do if You Have Road Rash<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a\u00a0motorcycle accident, you should always assess your injuries and call 911 to report the crash. If you have any aches and pains, you should consult with a doctor. Infections and scarring are common after\u00a0road rash\u00a0injuries, and it\u2019s a good idea to protect yourself.\u00a0Sometimes, your doctors will suggest monitoring and simple home remedies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Treat Minor, First-Degree Cases of Road Rash<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a minor case of\u00a0road rash, where your skin is just red and irritated, you may be able to treat it at home using a few simple supplies. However, even if your wound is treatable at home, we always recommend that victims contact their doctor to get advice and document their injury.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To treat\u00a0first-degree\u00a0road rash, you should:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Clean the area, but don\u2019t scrub too hard and risk causing more damage<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Apply antibiotic cream to the cleaned wound and cover with a clean bandage<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure to keep the bandage fresh and clean. If you notice any\u00a0signs of infection, like increased pain, inflammation, redness, pus, or drainage, call your doctor right away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the coronavirus crisis, we don\u2019t recommend going to the doctor without calling them first. However, if your wound isn\u2019t healing well, you should get\u00a0medical attention, either in-person by appointment or through your doctor\u2019s telehealth system.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Treat a Second-Degree or Third-Degree Case of Road Rash<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your\u00a0road rash\u00a0is severe or you have debris stuck deep in your skin, you need to have it treated by a health professional. Signs include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>A large\u00a0open wound, where you can see muscle or bone or is bleeding a lot<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The injury is located in a sensitive area, like face, hands, or feet<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>There is a large amount of debris in the wound, or there is particularly painful debris, like glass, stuck in the wound<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You are also suffered\u00a0broken bones, sprains or strains, or other wounds<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To clean and repair your injuries, you may need surgery,\u00a0skin grafts, and prescription medications. In a very serious case, you may need to go by ambulance directly to the emergency room for treatment\u2014the first responders will do their best to keep you safe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, you should never postpone treatment for second or\u00a0third-degree\u00a0road rash, even during the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0lockdown. If improperly cleaned and treated,\u00a0road rash\u00a0can easily become infected and result in serious scarring, causing you more pain and money in the future. At the very least, you should call your doctor and ask for advice. They will suggest a treatment plan that keeps you safe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suffering From Road Rash?
