His grandson, Chirag Patel, had brought him to Alabama from India to help his wife care for their young children while he studied electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. According to the official statement, police arrived on the scene and proceeded to give Sureshbhai Patel a pat down. Patel, who does not speak English, pulled away and was then forced to the ground resulting in a severe injury which left Patel paralyzed and hospitalized. The family quickly raised concerns over Patel’s treatment by local officers noting that Patel was simply walking on a public street and that his only suspicious action was being Indian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
